Almost a year ago they were also playing here,
these strangers in the Jazz venue
De Twee Spieghels,
Act of Mutiny.
Six men who sing seaman’s and other songs, a cappella
or accompanied by percussion, guitar, banjo, penny whistle or cello.
And it has to be said, they have grown in that year. The repertoire is more divers and their performance has also improved enormously. Besides standards from the Irish and American folk tradition, there is now also room for a song like Shiver me Timbers
which was originally sung by Tom Waits, or a great version of Diver Boy.
The third set closes with a smashing Black Betty medley.
Once again it was a party in De Twee Spieghels.

Review: Shanty Nederland
Leiden on a breezy Sunday afternoon. Everywhere there is live music…..Jazz.....Mexican Folk and…..Maritime Folk from Act of Mutiny. I had already been given a cd from one of the members and what I particularly noticed was the repertoire. Live far better than on the cd, well, a regularly practising choir makes progressive quality, doesn’t it? Perhaps a tip for choirs having difficulties practising …..The lads of Act of Mutiny receive their scores on the computer and they study their parts at home via MP3 or the computer. It is a group that distinguishes itself from other Shanty choirs, which often have an overlapping number of highly known shanties. At the Act of Mutiny concert we heard a number of very original maritime songs, some not quite shanties, but with a distinctive salty sound. I personally was struck by the exciting song
Dig My Grave sung by Jeroen,
a difficult song to sing with beautiful lyrics.
